Both are confronted with the similar kinds of complex issues concerning history, education, and also share memories of conflict with their former colonized countries. However, whereas heated debates on these issues are accepted as “normal” in France, there is little understanding of the similarities with Japan, maintained in its status of extreme “otherness”; and an uncritical acceptance of mainstream positions dominated by the PRC’s official discourse.
